The True Cost Of ObesityThe cost of obesity is truly an enormous amount. Obese people tend to need more health care than people who are naturally fit. This alone costs countries millions and millions of dollars every single year just treating these people. In the USA alone there are an estimated 60 million people who are clinically obese. The majority of these people require regular health attention by qualified people. The true cost will probably never be known, so what can we do about it? Recent statistics show that obesity takes up 12% of the National health budget in the United States and in 1999 alone obesity was reckoned to have cost $102 billion. This was a rise of over 5% of the study taken five years earlier. There are so many illnesses caused by obesity that all require specialist attention. Problems including heart disease, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, liver disease just to name a few. If the amount of the obese people was to be reduced, then this would save millions and millions of dollars every single year. So why isn't the government encouraging people to look after themselves better than they are doing? Well that's a good question! The biggest concern is an increase in childhood obesity. It is estimating to be rising 5% every single year and doesn't look like slowing down. It is vital to teach children the importance of not becoming obese at an early age, so that they can carry this through to their teenage and adult life. It is often easy to think that obesity is caused by laziness but that is quite often not the case at all. Although a healthy diet and regular exercise is always recommended, sometimes other health issues can make a person become obese. Problems such as physical difficulties can mean people won't be able to be as active as what they should. This means they won't be able to burn off calories as much as other people and can lead quite easily to putting on weight. There are always things you can do to try and avoid becoming obese. As mentioned earlier, if you can watch what you eat and tried to exercise every day, this will greatly reduce your risk of becoming obese. If everyone just stuck to a few guidelines regarding diet and fitness, then the cost of obesity will be greatly reduced in the world today. This extra money could then be used for many more important things such as poverty. |
